Vision for MFL

‘I can do all things through Him who strengthens me’ (Philippians 4:13)

At the heart of our languages teaching is the importance of achievement for the life opportunities of our children.  Our shared understanding and passion for this, along with our school motto

‘With fun and learning, hand in hand, all things are possible.’

help us, with the best intent, to choose how we teach languages, and provide a consistent richness of experience across the school. Our languages curriculum enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. We strive to teach languages in a way that reflects our shared purpose and Christian ethos, as well as encompassing our school values of Respect, Creation, Fellowship, Wisdom and Hope.

Languages is an integral part of enriching children’s experiences and cultural capital. Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible. We want children to develop an appropriate balance of spoken and written language which lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. The MFL curriculum allows for constant repetition of vocabulary and phrases and French will be taught for 30 minutes per week to KS2 classes. Learning will incorporate a range of active, verbal lessons with a smaller focus on written work.  Children will be encouraged to engage in games and activities to ingrain their learning. Work will be recorded in children’s Topic books.

Children are assessed informally during lessons to evaluate what they have learned. For each year group there are some learning milestones to reach. The learning outcomes are based on the Threshold Concepts for languages and focuses particularly on four main concepts: Read fluently; Write imaginatively; Speak confidently and Understand the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken.

We seek to:

  • deliver the aims and content of the National Curriculum through the Scheme of Work ‘iLanguages

  • deliver French to children in Years 3-6

  • plan and structure lessons to be inclusive so that all children can acquire the confidence to speak with good intonation and pronunciation, with increasing fluency, creativity and spontaneity.

  • lead children into discovering an awareness of the culture of the countries where French is spoken

  • develop a passion for languages and a commitment to the teaching of French

  • instill the skills of independence in the children’s studies, so that the children can draw upon a variety of authentic sources

  • create linguists who write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

  • keep up to date as teachers and share good practice.
